Street Spirits creates many performances each year. We are asked to custom create plays, we are asked to present plays that people have seen or heard about from our playlist of past shows and we create new plays through the workshop process. The content of our plays is designed to raise awareness of issues and to give audience members an opportunity to generate solutions to those issues by intervening and working through the problems in the play. From time to time we create plays that have harsh and disturbing content. It is unrealistic to present a play about violence with toned down violence. However, we also realize that some performances would not be acceptable to some audiences. In recognition of this we try to tailor our performances to the audience. This means that if we are performing in a school for example, we would soften the language and content to a standard suitable for that audience. When we perform for an adult audience we try to be as realistic as possible. We have had people in the past see a show prepared for an adult audience and assume that all of our shows are like that. Not so. We have created shows acceptable for elementary school audiences about bullying, peer pressure, tobacco and alcohol. We have created plays about racism, relationship violence, child abuse and drug use for teen audiences. We have also created plays about family violence, prostitution and drug use that are clearly meant for adult audiences and are advertised as such. When people call to book us we let them know the range in which we work and we ask them to advise us of their community standards so that the show will fit the audience.

Hey Andrew, We are making posters for the UNBC Diversity COmmittee advertizing your appearance on campus MArch 21. What info should we include about your group?

Have members of your group ever come as far as Fort McMurray, Alberta? and what would it take to have you put on some shows for the school districts up here.

In other words I am teacher that has seen your group before and would like to have you be able to come up for some shows: if not for a wide variety of schools at least at the school I teach at currently: this is something I would be interested in trying to set up for the beginning of next year (september/october) if it is possible… please let me know what you may or may not require for such a trip.

Sincerely,

Brad St. Denis
